Moving FAQ

What is a binding estimate?
A binding estimate is a contract that specifies the exact cost of the move based on the services requested or deemed necessary at the time of the estimate. If additional services are requested or required at either destination, the total cost will increase. At Smooth Move, you will be billed for actual time incurred which often may be less than our original estimate. Our estimating process is generally very accurate for in-home estimates.
What is a non-binding estimate?
A non-binding estimate charges you according to the actual weight of your shipment and the actual cost of the services that are performed. You will still go though the estimating process to determine what your shipment may cost. To verify the weight of your shipment, the Smooth Move driver will weigh the truck prior to loading your shipment. Once your shipment is loaded, the driver will weigh the truck again. All other charges will be calculated at the drop off destination. If there are any additional charges that are incurred during the delivery process, the driver will provide you with the additional cost.
What is a bill of lading?
Every mover is required to prepare a bill of lading. The bill of lading is the receipt for your goods and the contract with your mover for their transportation. The driver who loads your shipment must give you a copy of the bill of lading. Please read over your bill of lading. It is a list of each charge and amount that is to be paid at the time of the move.
How long will my move take?
A general rough estimate is one hour of loading and unloading per room. There are other factors, such as stairs or bulky items that could affect this estimate; however, our goal at Smooth Move is one hour for loading and unloading. We offer both over the phone and on-site estimates for larger moves.
What method of payment will be accepted?
If you decide to use Smooth Move, we accept all major credit cards, cash, and check.
Do you require a deposit?
We do not require a deposit for local moves estimated to be completed the same day. A deposit is required on long distance and nationwide moves. The deposit is fully refundable should the move be cancelled for any reason subject to proper notice being given as defined under our cancellation policy below.
What is your cancellation policy?

Once your move is confirmed on our schedule, we ask for at least a 48-hour notice to be given in order to cancel a move without being subject to any charges or cancellation fees. Moves cancelled without proper notice may be subject to our daily minimum charge (as noted on the formal estimate) or forfeiting a deposit.

Do you have to take clothes out of the drawers?

Generally, clothes are able to be left inside and moved in drawers assuming the piece of furniture they are being moved in is not abnormally large or heavy. We recommend removing any loose, fragile or valuable items prior to your move.

Do you offer storage?

We offer both climate-controlled warehouse storage as well as on-site storage in our 16′ portable storage containers for both long-term and short-term storage solutions.

Do you offer long-distance moving?

We are fully licensed and insured for both interstate and intrastate moving throughout the Southeast as well as all over the United States for moves to or from the Carolinas.
