If you have a student heading off to college, you’re not alone. Last fall, the National Center for Education Statistics estimated that 20.4 million students enrolled at colleges and universities across the country. In addition to books, many of those students will be moving their stuff from their parents’ homes to dorms and apartments. Even if your student doesn’t have enough stuff to require the services of local movers, Smooth Move wants to help make things easier. Here are three things no college student should forget when they’re moving back to school.

  1. Storage containers: Dorm rooms are notoriously small—and some apartments aren’t much better. There may be very little space for storage. In some cases, closets may be shared among roommates. Bring storage containers that can go under the bed or that can stack. Plastic tubs, crates, and hanging organizers are especially helpful.
  2. Small appliances: Your student may not want to trek to the dining hall or coffee shop for their caffeine fix. Find out if coffeemakers are allowed in living areas. A mini-fridge or microwave will really come in handy, too. Just be sure to follow all safety rules and regulations.
  3. Cleaning supplies: Even the tiniest spaces can get untidy in a hurry. Bring basic cleaning supplies like a small broom, a dust mop, and paper towels. Don’t forget laundry supplies and dish soap, too.
